Grayndler covers an area of approximately 32 sq km in the inner-southern Sydney metropolitan area. The main suburbs include Ashfield, Dulwich Hill, Enmore, Haberfield, Hurlstone Park, Leichhardt, Lewisham, Lilyfield, Marrickville, Petersham, Stanmore, Summer Hill, Sydenham, Tempe and parts of Annandale, Ashbury, Camperdown, Canterbury, Newtown, and St Peters.

It was named after Edward Grayndler 1867-1943, a Member of the New South Wales Legislative Council 1921-34 and 1936-43. He was also appointed General Secretary of the Australian Workers’ Union in 1912.

The local member is Anthony Albanese.albo

Albanese is a factional heavy-weight of the Labor Left.  He is currently the  Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government and leader of the House of Representatives.

Albanese was a Labor party machine man, serving as Assistant General Secretary of the New South Wales branch of the Australian Labor Party (1989-95).   Albanese entered parliament in 1996.

Election campaigns:  Albanese sees The Greens as a threat and in the past two election has spent much of his election campaign trying to confuse voters about preferences (so they get scared that by voting Green they might have been helping John Howard, so they default back to Labor).  This has been an effective tactic, but may not work now he is in government and the Howard bogey man has gone.

As Minister for Transport and Infrastructure, Albanese is in charge of policy for Sydney Airport.  This is his big chance to actually make a difference on aircraft noise for the residents of Grayndler.  So far he has only been stunts like webtrack and revived the tarnished chimera of a ’second airport’ as the panacea to aircraft noise problems.

The Greens argue that a second airport will not solve aircraft noise issues for the Inner West.  See out airport issues page.
