The Greens will move a motion at next week’s council meeting for Marrickville Council to divest from financial institutions that invest in, or finance fossil fuels, saying Council should join the world-wide movement of organisations, institutions and individuals divesting from polluting fossil fuels and towards clean energy.

“Our future and our children’s future depends on shifting from polluting fossil fuels to clean energy in order to avoid dangerous climate change. Marrickville Council can puts it support and money behind the world-wide divestment campaign against fossil fuels,” said Greens Councillor Max Phillips.

“Marrickville Council has a strong commitment to combating climate change, with programs aimed at cutting emissions.  We should back that up to ensure the financial institutions we use are not funding coal mines or coal seam gas projects.””Hundreds of cities, universities, churches, foundations and many individuals are making an impact by telling their banks or super funds that they do not want their money invested in fossil fuels.

“Recently in Australia the Uniting Church and Sydney University moved to divest their funds from fossil fuels.  Bendigo and Adelaide Bank now publicly oppose investment in fossil fuels, while Future Super was launched to give people a 100% fossil fuel free superannuation option.
