The Greens have endorsed West Ward local Justine Langford as their candidate for Marrickville Council’s by-election on Saturday November 15.

“The impact of development on residents quality of life of must be returned to the forefront of all Council’s decision making,” Ms Langford said, a digital producer with the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

“The current Council has focused too much on giving developers what they want at the cost of the environment and the unique built heritage of our area. The Labor/Liberal majority on Council has overturned Council staff recommendations that oppose the re-zoning of industrial land around Victoria road. If that re-zoning is approved it will force out the creative industries that bring new jobs to our area and underpin Marrickville’s growing reputation as an arts hub.

“A vibrant Marrickville must have an appropriate mix of housing and industry, and Labor, Liberal and Independent Councillors cannot simply pander to the narrow self-interest of developers. Affordable accommodation and creative employment industries must be protected.

“I am also deeply concerned at the continuing pollution of the Cooks River. I walk my dog along the river every day and the appalling water quality represents a failure by local, state and federal government to really care for our natural environment.

“There is a strong desire from residents in my neighborhood to help clean up our river. Our Council needs to be a strong voice insisting on action to ensure a better environment for our children and our future.

“I look forward to meeting with and hearing the concerns of West Ward residents and if elected I pledge to listen and be available to residents and represent their views on Council. Marrickville is a great place to live, but I’d like to think we can make it even better” Ms Langford said.

Justine Langford has lived in the Marrickville Local Government area for over 20 years. She has an Honors degree in Communications from UTS. Ms Langford is passionate about sustainability and has recently become a volunteer at the Green Living Centre in Newtown. She has worked at the ABC for 20 years and is a workplace delegate for the Community and Public Sector Union. Ms Langford lives in West Marrickville near Dulwich Hill Railway Station.
